Note to Self: Today was a good day
By Kelly Brown
Today was a good day.
There were sleep ins and snuggles, wizards and muggles.
Work and a job well done.
There were bare legs and feet, exploring the creek,
and chats with sweet fellow mums.
There were compliments given and siblings forgiven.
Connection, presence and fun.
There was swaying to a beat, thinking, “how cool are feet?”,
and dragging arse off couch for a run.
Today was a good day.
As gran would say, “Simple pleasures are second to none.”
Note to self: Life’s little delights are always there for the taking – mastery, human connection, fresh air, nature. All I have to do is seek them out and savour them in to fill my happy tank.
When we take in positive experiences and momentarily hold on to them as we do, we’re not only growing flowers in the garden of our minds, we’re growing new neural circuits in our brains. As they say in neuroscience: “Neurons that fire together wire together”. Mental states become neural traits. Day after day, our minds are building our brains.
It’s a discipline, but intentionally noticing and revelling in the little wonders every day builds the mental fortitude I need to face life’s bigger challenges more positively. I figure that’s got to be a good thing.
