Sawyer Burn

Kidds Bush nature loop

Kidds Bush nature loop

Sawyer Burn is a fabulous short, sharp hike up from Kidds Bush campsite until you’re above the treeline, then a cruisy jaunt around the hill until suddenly, you’re in the middle of nowhere looking at big, jaggedy Sentinel Peak and friends.

It’s an easy 4-5 hour (5km) return walk or you can overnight at a very simple two-bed hut that sits very pretty in the bush just above a wee stream.

There are so many delights along the way - epic views of Lake Hawea, birdlife and tiny trackside flowers.

Back at the start of the track, the 1km Kidds Bush nature loop is a beautiful way to finish off the walk. The bush floor is so soft and springy.

Park at Kidds Bush Recreation Reserve campsite, Meads Road (32 km north of Wanaka off the Makarora to Lake Hawea Road).
